Why you feel nauseous from drinking water on an empty stomach…

For some people, water first thing in the morning (or after a long fast) does not feel refreshing; it feels nauseating. If this sounds familiar, your empty stomach may be the cause.

When you have not eaten for many hours, your stomach is relatively empty but still producing baseline acid. Hormones like ghrelin rise to prepare your digestive system for food. Drinking a large amount of water at once can change the stomach environment quickly, diluting acid, altering volume, and affecting motility, which can cause nausea.

In certain people, plain water on an empty stomach can also exaggerate hunger signals or cause a hollow, sloshy feeling. That mismatch (full of fluid, but still hungry) can feel unsettling enough to trigger queasiness or even the urge to gag.

Instead of reaching for a huge glass of water right away, it can help to start with a smaller amount and pair it with a light snack, such as a few crackers, toast, or something slightly salty.

If nausea appears whenever you drink water, not just when your stomach is empty, it is worth exploring other reasons too. Check out our full breakdown of 8 Reasons You Feel Nauseous After Drinking Water—And How to Avoid It.
